    @126UserProgram
I never thought that until you mentioned it 126UP, but it makes sense.
I always wondered why, if this was a song about Christ’s birth, did Sting look so darned pissed in the video. And why he seemed irritated by the angels dancing and flying happily around him. And why that one angel looked startled at one point.
With your comment, I wonder no more. He IS portraying Satan in it, and is naturally pissed because he knows he has lost with Christ’s birth.
    Very good observation!

This song sounds creepy. Love it though. x3

    It’s a medieval song. ;-)

haunting…one of the best versions of Christmas songs in the last half of the 20th Century…and still holds up today. The music and arrangement kinda reflect the “darkness and barreness” of the winter solstice

Maddy Prior’s version of this song is the gold standard. It’s amazing.

One of my favorite Christmas carols–Sting nails it! Funny, I prefer his version of this song, and I don’t like his original stuff that much!

blah what are you talking about dude?

    sting as the devil forelorn?

listen to his voice, the embodiement (sp? who cares)

    what does it represent?

struggle? well, in the very least, its angelical,

and at most, its empiraclly (sp? who cares) devine,

at the very least, similar to what gabriel has on his end

but who has time for religious philosophical renderings,

in the spirtitual war that has been happening for, what, 2,000 years?

(china? and the mid east? and the new world order? and what is going to happen? my guess, we make it, or we erradicate ourselves (sp? i know), or Gabriel pulls the string in the pantry on the sun, and it goes out, to “scare” us into creation, or its permanate and its over) thomas

ARAMATH, I really enjoy your take on this video. It was uplifting. The “Eternal Yes,” and let the Devil fall.

I do not think this anti-Catholic. I always had in my mind the idea that Sting represents the Devil forlorn while the Angels celebrate the coming of the Christ who will free mankind from the Devil’s grip on them.

A foreshadowing of the Devil’s eventual downfall?

I do like the simplicity of the video and the darkness….think of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come…. “this Spirit moved it seemed to scatter gloom and mystery”.

If I am ever visited by the Gabriel, and he tells they tell me what is up, I will meekly bow too. In the name of Christ, all is beautiful. Thank you for my life. God bless all.

this is possibly the best biblical song I’ve ever heard. Amazing harmony, etc.

This is an old song, and a classic Christmas song, and I will have to say, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE his version. Haunting and Beautiful to say the least!

wow…my head looks really big in that video…and lets be a little more understanding about the quality since it was taken in ’87 and sting had to deal with a kid like me pushing him plus i was soo tired of having the guy to do the same thing over and over again for the camera.

The video itself is aweful. But Sting and the Police did a wonderful job with the music.

Yes, the video is regular, but the sting’s voice is the best of this cd. It’s incredible.

I agree the video sucks but stings vocals are awesome.

    Vampires aren’t all that bad!

  23. Posted by rockyracune on August 3rd, 2010 at 11:29 am

I love the song. But the video is really kind of creepy. You could put spooky music in the video and it would look like a big vampire with his little vampire children. Who ever made this video had a problem with Catholics, I suppose. Where is the grace of Mary?

  24. Posted by rockyracune on August 3rd, 2010 at 11:46 am

The music is absolutely wonderful. (I have listened to this song in July!). The words capture one of my favorite parts in the Bible (and even the Koran). I love Mary’s “Eternal Yes,” as it speaks to each generation of Christians. By saying “Yes” Mary knew she was inviting banishment or a stoning, as required by the law. Still, she agreed to take the risk. Also, let’s not forget Joseph, who protected Mary and helped raise the child Jesus. The video itself? Well, it’s OK, but it lacks beauty.

This is one of the most cherished, little known secret that is only appreciated by few. I am so happy to see the comments of those who DO understand the magnitude of this spiritual tune. Sting is at his finest, the lyrics are chosen for many, received by few and our message to understand each other and live well.. God bless.. Sun
