What Can Brands Learn From Lady Gaga?

Simon Cowell calls her, "The most relevant artist in the world", but when Emily Eavis booked Lady Gaga for Glastonbury last year, she was just some up-and-coming, hotly tipped thing from the New York gay scene.

By the end of the year, Lady Gaga had sold more than 8 million albums and 35 million singles, been nominated for six Grammys and three Brit Awards – as well as becoming the first artist to have four number one singles taken off her debut album. At her New Years party in Miami, tables went for £20,000 a go. Not bad for a 23 year old who started off dancing in burlesque clubs when she was just 16 and broke.

The fun really started after her Glastonbury performance when a YouTube video was posted showing a little "something extra" peeking out from under Gaga's miniskirt.

"Lady Gaga is a man!" gossip columns declared.

When confronted in an interview, she allegedly said, "It's not something that I'm ashamed of, just isn't something that I go around telling everyone. Yes. I have both male and female genitalia, but I consider myself a female". The ‘Is she / Isn't she debate' raged throughout the media and Lady Gaga did nothing to slow down the speculation.

It reminded me of that oft-quoted saying from Manchester's very own Tony Wilson,

"If it's a choice between truth and the legend. Print the legend".

She obviously has talent, but she decided to become a spectacle. If you don't know what I mean, YouTube her singing Paparazzi covered in blood at the 2009 MTV Video awards. She has that admirably retro notion that a pop star should look like something that has just escaped from some manner of space zoo and is stalking the streets, looking for humans to mate with and/or eat.

But what does all this have to do with business and why should you care who she is?

The lessons that entrepreneurs can learn from Lady Gaga are not what she has done, but how she did it. It's not by accident that Forbes Magazine ranked her ‘The Most Powerful On-Line Celebrity in the World' earlier this year.

Companies who previously didn't understand how to use Twitter or Facebook properly, now employ ‘social media executives' who look to celebrities like Lady Gaga for inspiration about growing their own brands.

5 Tips to "Grow Your Brand Like Lady Gaga"

Relinquish control. Unlike other artists who police their image rights obessively, Gaga doesn't allow professional photographers into her concerts but is ok with fans recording and putting videos on YouTube. That simple act of handing distribution rights over to her fans has been one of the keys to her global success. It is something brand owners everywhere should learn from.
Make your customers feel like rock stars. One staple of Gaga's "Monster Ball" tour is to call a fan in the audience during the show. She dials the number onstage, the fan screams out, is located and they are put up on a big screen. While the rest of audience goes bananas, she invites the fan to have a drink with her after the show.
Leverage social media. Gaga has the requisite Facebook fan page (over 5 million fans) and Twitter ID (almost 3 million followers) but it's how she uses them that drives loyalty. On Twitter, she tells fans what she is doing, such as tweeting them before she opened the Grammy Awards. She also tweeted to fans that she was buying them pizza for waiting overnight at an album signing.
Give fans a name. Gaga doesn't like the word "fan" so she calls them her "Little Monsters," named after her album "The Fame Monster." She even tattooed "Little Monsters" on her arm and tweeted the pic to fans professing love for them. Now fans are getting their own Little Monster tattoos. By giving the group a formal name, it gives fans a way to refer to each other. Fans feel like they are joining a special club.
Be more creative. Lady Gaga's image is her USP, but she's not all fur coat and no knickers. She set up her own production company, ‘The Haus of Gaga', where her and her cool creative friends sit around and decide what they can do that's not been done before. Now when she has the last minute idea of performing in a 14ft long bathtub on the X-Factor, then playing a piano hidden in the basin, it can be turned around in 48 hours. Unsurprisingly, she doesn't worry about being around people who say "No" to her ideas anymore.

Whether Gaga will have staying power remains to be seen. But she is making waves in the music business and teaching plenty of people the power of fandom.

One Answer Emerged From Michael Jackson Death Hearing -- Many Questions

Michael Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray, sailed with flying colors through his week-long preliminary hearing which ended with a favorable decision from the judge to try the singer's personal physician for involuntary manslaughter. This decision favors Dr Murray because not to charge him at all would make him susceptible to future more serious criminal charges regarding Jackson's death.

When Murray was first indicted with the accidental death charge, Jacksons' friends, fans and family cried foul play and called for indictments for First Degree Murder and Conspiracy to Commit Murder charges; with his fans petitioning for broader investigation into Jackson's death. The consensus was Murray should not have been charged without a thorough investigation since Jackson had foretold his own death -- saying, in essence, that the Beatle Catalog was too valuable, everybody wanted it, that he was being pressured to sell, but would never sell the catalog and he knew he'd probably be killed for it .

Dr Murray was brought in by AEG to be Jackson's personal physician in the lead-up to what was to be the singer's farewell world tour, 'This Is It,' with concerts soon to kick off in London. The preliminary hearing was for Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor to answer the legal question whether there was enough evidence for Murray to stand trial on the involuntary manslaughter charge.

Dr Murray, 57, a cardiologist had pleaded not guilty, and his attorneys maintained that he did not give Jackson anything that should have killed him. Murray also stated that Jackson injected himself and is responsible for his own death. Murray could face up to four years in prison if convicted. But because of his "clean" record, may not serve a day.

Deputy District Attorney David Walgren said in his opening statement that Dr Murray was using the surgical anesthetic, propofol, to cure Jackson of insomnia. He had given Jackson a dose of the powerful drug, typically administered in clinical settings, after giving him various sedatives during the previous night. He also said Jackson was already dead when Murray summoned help and tried to conceal his administering of propofol to the pop star.

"The court will learn that in the opinion of these medical experts, there were a number of actions displayed by Dr Murray that showed an extreme deviation from standard medical care," Mr Walgren said.

Murray had been giving Jackson propofol, six nights a week for roughly two months before his death, the prosecutor said.

Murray's attorney declined to give an opening statement.

Paramedic Richard Senneff, who responded to Jackson's home, gave testimony that he arrived and found Jackson motionless. He said that Murray never told him the singer had taken propofol, despite being asked if Jackson was on any medication. (Propofol is immediately absolved by the body's tissues and within minutes no traces of it can be detected.)

The paramedic said other things Murray told him did not seem to add up: that Jackson had no underlying condition and was just being treated for dehydration, and that the only medication he had been given was the sedative lorazepam. Senneff also said his crew detected no pulse, and that based on Jackson's dilated pupils and cold limbs, it appeared his heart had stopped more than 20 minutes before.

Senneff said even when pressed repeatedly about what medication Jackson had been given, Murray never mentioned the powerful anesthetic that was eventually determined to have caused the singer's death.

Walgren described Murray's actions as "an extreme deviation from the standard of care."

Paramedic Martin Blount testified about being surprised to see drug bottles because defendant Dr. Conrad Murray had told paramedics he hadn't given Jackson any drugs."I saw three small bottles of lidocaine," Blount testified. "He scooped them off the floor and put them into a black bag."

Police Detective Orlando Martinez testified earlier and said Murray told him he found Jackson not breathing just after 11 a.m. on June 25, 2009. But phone records showed 911 was not called until 12:21 p.m.

Phone records also showed Murray had a phone conversation that ended at 11:50 a.m., and made two other calls before calling Jackson's personal assistant, Michael Williams, at 12:12 p.m. The men spoke for three minutes. Then at 12:21 p.m., the frantic 911 call was made summoning paramedics.

Michael Williams testified that as the singer's body lay in bed, Jackson manager Frank Dileo told his children: "Daddy had a heart attack and died." Mr Williams said that Dr Murray then said: "Don't say that, we don't know."

Williams also said Dr Murray had asked him before calling paramedics to clear "cream" from the singer's bedroom "that he wouldn't want the world to know about." Mr Williams said he did not follow through on the request.

Choreographer Kenny Ortega told the court that Jackson had appeared unwell and out of shape in the days leading up to his death. He testified about when Jackson went home early from rehearsals. He said Jackson appeared lost. "It was scary. I couldn't put my finger on it," Ortega said. "I said 'Michael, is this the best place for you to be or do you want to go home and be with your family?' He said, 'Would you be OK with that?' I said, 'OK,' and he left."

The next morning, Ortega said, he was called to Jackson's home where he was confronted by Murray, Jackson, DiLeo, and Randy Phillips, head of AEG, the company producing Jackson's "This is It" comeback tour.

"It quickly became clear that the meeting was about me," Ortega said. "Dr. Murray was upset that I had sent Michael home the night before and didn't allow him to rehearse."

Dr. Conrad Murray and others suggested Jackson should not have been sent home because he was physically and emotionally fine, Ortega testified, adding he was told not to try to be Jackson's doctor or psychiatrist.

Prosecutors concluded their case with testimony from two doctors who said Murray acted outside the standard of medical care when he administered the anesthetic propofol and failed to provide proper care.

Dr. Richard Ruffalo, an anesthesiologist and clinical pharmacologist, gave the judge an exhaustive rundown on the sophisticated medical equipment that should have been present when Murray had administered the drug. "Even if you're using propofol for a short time, it can do a lot of unfortunate things, especially if mixed with other drugs."

Dr. Christopher Rogers, chief of forensic medicine for the Los Angeles County coroner, testified that Murray was improperly using propofol to treat the musician for insomnia, and that Murray was wrong to leave Jackson's side while he was under anesthesia before he died. Rogers also said Jackson had a strong heart and was mostly healthy.

Both expert witnesses said that even if Jackson had self-administered the final dose of the drug, his death would be a homicide because of Murray's actions.

After hearing testimony that Dr Murray administered a lethal dose of a powerful anesthetic and other sedatives then left the pop star alone to die, Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor resolved the legal inquiry before his court by charging Conrad Murray with Involuntary Manslaughter.

Although the evidence showed Dr Murray's actions to be deliberate, and Jackson's death not in the least "accidental," many questions of interest to his fans remain unanswered and are unlikely to be addressed at the doctor's criminal trial -- particularly the MOTIVE for Dr Murray's reckless "deviation from standard medical care."

The rocking teen star Justin has acquired a vast number of fans from all over the world and above all Girls are showing a lot of interest to date with him. The Promotional Performance was cancelled by Australian police after several girls were injured in a crowd crush on April 26. The Latest buzz is that the rocking star has signed a contract with world's famous music directors and for the next one year his shows will be produced by them. There is no doubt that Justin Bieber is the hottest pop star around, but you have to remember that the kid is only sixteen years old and measures in at only 5' 4? tall. Well, that is not stopping NBA star Shaquille O'Neal from taking on Bieber in the upcoming season of his reality show "Shaq Vs," reports Celebuzz. In the show the basketball star challenges athletes in their own sports, but it's not clear as to what Bieber and Shaq will be facing off in. Pop music is alive and well, just ask Justin Bieber, B.o.B. or Ke$ha. All scored at least two titles in Nielsen SoundScan's tally of top selling albums and songs for the first half of 2010 according to Billboard. The Rock music is fully left out of the top 10 selling albums, even though Train's "Hey Soul Sister," lands at No. 1 for the best-selling single so far. B.o.B. is looking like a shoo-in for a best new artist Grammy nod with two tunes in the top 10. The well known teen star Justin Bieber is releasing new songs like they are air. He just released a new one with the help of DJ Tay James. The song can be found at the bottom of this post. The song has the classic teen rap feel to it and you can tell that Justin Bieber enjoyed rapping in it. Though I am not sure about a song about a mall, let alone one in Omaha! I guess it is due to his crazed fans and maybe his own experience from being at the Omaha mall. The two great singers Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga have once again made upward advances on the Billboard 200 chart this week. As the numbers were released today by Nielsen SoundScan, both artists have seen how summer performances have increased album sales. While Justin continues touring the country on his My World tour, the teen pop star has seen increased popularity in his "My World 2.0 album. The Justin's album jumped up 2 spots last week with sales of over 41,000 copies. This week, he is up one spot into the No. 5 position. The sale has increased by 4% as fans purchased over 43,000 copies of the album. The rocking star Justin Bieber apparently enjoyed the matchup between Spain and the Netherlands, tweeting, "wow...SPAIN!! great game. Nothing to be ashamed of." The Spanish team may have reigned victorious but the Canadian teen showed love to the Netherlands as well. The rocking star Justin Bieber Starting with the youngest, he has been in the middle of numerous controversies and hoaxes related to his life. From accident rumors to death hoax to hooking up with older females, the 16-years old singer has it all. It has been the most awful when he has been rumored to have impregnated his mother. The poor fellow could have this as the ugliest ever rumor in his life. The guy is just 16 and most likely way younger an artist to handle such cheap controversies. *Below is the sixteenth episode in a series of real life events experienced by the author. The only deviations from the truth may be the names of people and places. These stories are also incorporated in âMy Friend Yu â the Prosperity Mentor: Book II,â Pantejo - Y.N. Vurce Publishing. Release Date: 2008.

In the last article, âExperiences from âThe Flowâ(15) - Farang: Interpretation of Your Results,â we began discussing Neutral Relationships.

Next, I provided a word of caution about avoiding a false sense of security and describing a normal Western/Asian Neutral Relationship.

Then you were introduced to âkiksâ (Pronounced âgeeks,â a Thai word for âmistress or side-girlfriend/boyfriend) and the kind of life they lead.

Lastly, we talked about some historical perspectives on relationships.

In this article, we will explore the reasons why Neutral Relationships still exist today and why these types of relationships are better left alone.

- Perpetuation of Neutral Relationships -

Unlike the past when Neutral Relationships proliferated in order to survive harsh living conditions, there are still many Neutral Relationships today that are not based on mere survival.

Why? Ignorance.

Some people, especially in less modernized countries, simply donât know any better. They are stuck in a cultural/economic trap.

In all Asian countries, especially in the rural areas, existence thatâs above mere survival is still the âHoly Grail,â the lofty goal that only a few people can attain. Busy trying to survive, these people have not been taught about all of the human joys that a relationship (with a compatible partner) can generate. Theyâve been sheltered from any notions of seeking and obtaining long-term happiness from any relationship.

Since plain oleâ âhand to mouthâ or âpaycheck to paycheckâ survival is their reality, anything more than that is considered over and above the main purpose of coupling with a mate.

In fact, most people from rural Asia are overjoyed to have ANY partner - much less a partner who makes them happy.

They canât afford to be picky.

- Fear vs. Desire -

Another big reason why Neutral Relationships still abound is fear (specifically fear vs. desire).

Fear of being alone (a true phobia of loneliness) causes many to stay in Neutral relationships. In those cases, the fear of loneliness dwarfs the desire for all else. Yes, these people may secretly yearn for an exciting or fulfilling relationship, but the thought of âbeing aloneâ terrifies them.

Ironically, most of these people donât realize that being alone does not automatically lead to loneliness.

Really, if you are one of those people who feel like âhalf a person,â or simply go stir-crazy (or depressed, or lonely) when you are alone, please read those articles.

They will help you realize that being alone is not the end of the world and can actually be liberating.

I wrote those articles last year when I was trying to cope with the antics of my last girlfriend. Initially, with acidic sarcasm, but now with humorous irony (even affection); I dubbed her âThe Magicianâ â a professional escape artist/disappearing act specialist!

I was extremely lonely and unhappy, simply miserable.

Since I knew that all human suffering can be traced down to an error in thought (i.e., a point of view that serves no positive purpose), I desperately searched for my own personal answers.

In the articles, I point toward the Illusive Secret of Happiness â Yourself.

I teach you how to regain the power (YOUR POWER) that you have unconsciously given to someone (or something else).

Okay, back to the current discussion.

A large percentage of the population prefers being alone.

Others, myself included, demand my own personal time everyday. I openly acknowledge this need for personal reflection/creative time. More so than most, I feel like something is definitely wrong when Iâm too busy to have time for myself.

I require this time alone to think, exercise, read, and write everyday. My partner knows this and we schedule our day accordingly. She usually does something she wants to do (happily, not grudgingly) during the alone time.

I asked a friend of mine, âWhy do you stay with her even though she does nothing for you?â

He said, âI just like having her around. We never DO anything, but at least Iâm not alone.â

Until he changes his own personal philosophy on relationships (or she goes overboard on Minus items), Iâm sure his situation â and future situations - will be the same.

Most likely, in my friendâs case, his girlfriend will take whatever she can get and move on. Itâs happened before and Iâm certain it will happen again.

Oh well, itâs his life.

- The Scorpion and the Frog -

Once there was a scorpion and a frog beside a river. Since the scorpion could not swim well, he asked the frog for a piggyback ride across the river.

âIf I give you a ride, you will sting me, and I will die,â says the frog.

âWhy would I do that? If I sting you while riding on your back, we will both die,â says the scorpion.

So, the frog agrees to take the scorpion across the river.

Half-way across the river, the scorpion raises his tail and delivers a fatal sting.

âWhy did you sting me? Now we will both die,â the frog gasps.

âBecause itâs my nature,â says the scorpion.

And with that, the scorpion stings himself.

Remember this: You can never change anyoneâs basic nature unless itâs their idea in the first place. In spite of external prodding or pressure, people donât change unless they want to.

And, for complex reasons I may never understand, some people plainly self-destruct!

You must accept this fact. Not doing so invites chronic disappointment in your life â to stay.

- Being Alone vs. Neutral Relationships -

Let me spend a little time now extolling the virtues of being alone versus being in a Neutral Relationship.

Think of this.

There is no movement on Your Satisfaction Scale. This means you are neither overtly compatible, nor grossly incompatible. Thereâs no âRun away now!â repulsion; but thereâs also no strong attraction either.

Neutral.

You can get this level of compatibility from any perfect stranger!

Why invest so much of your time, money, and emotions into a Neutral Relationship where your net level of compatibility equals that of a stranger?

Think. Think hard!

With a stranger, no give and take has taken place yet.

Meaning: a stranger hasnât already drained any personal resources from you!

Why escalate your commitment in a Neutral Relationship when the net relationship benefits (Pluses less Minuses) equal those of a stranger?

Bottom line on Neutral Relationships?

Unless there is a realistic belief that more Pluses will be added and some Minuses will be deleted (effectively changing the relationship into a Positive tipping of Your Scale), Neutral Relationships are not worth the time, effort, money, and emotion.

Itâs your choice. You can keep pouring your precious life energy into a Neutral Relationship, or you can get off your duff and get some Pluses for the Pluses you are giving from another person.

- Change Your Scale -

If youâre in a Neutral Relationship, I hope Iâve provided enough rationale in this article to motivate you to change the picture of Your Scale. Hopefully, you are making Your Scale sway toward Compatibility - constantly adding Pluses and deleting Minuses.

Additionally, if need be, I trust that you now have the fortitude to walk away from a Neutral Relationship that shows no signs of changing.

He is a retired U.S. Military veteran. Believing that school was too boring, he dropped out of High School early; only to earn an A.A., B.S., and MBA in less than 4 years much later in life – while working full-time as a Navy/Marine Corps Medic. In spite of a fear of heights and deep water, he free-fall parachuted out of airplanes and performed diving ops in very deep, open ocean water.
