Practice as much as you can. I used to sit and do scales while watching TV. I remember hearing a story of Stevie Ray Vauhn sitting on his bed practicing his guitar and his room mates would ask him to go out to some local bars with them. He would turn them down. Five or so hours later they would come back and Stevie would be in the same spot still practicing.

Don’t get sloppy. Try not to go too fast at first. This is one of the biggest mistakes for beginners. When learning your scales, play them real slow. Be precise and steady. The speed will come to you later. Learn your scales backwards and forwards in every position on the neck.

Almost all the great guitar players have listened to and learned how to play classical music. Study classical music. If you master that you will be able to play anything. It may not be your style but look at Eddie Van Halen, Malmsteen, Randy Rhoads and other greats. They all are great classical musicians.

If you are learning on an electric guitar, play it unplugged or with a completely clean sound. This will force you to play clean. Pedals and effect boards make you sound better than you are. Most of all have fun. Learn songs you like and want to learn.

The big selling point for Jam Sessions 2 is that players will pick up the game, play it, and not realize they are learning guitar as they do. I couldn't disagree more with that, however, as instead Jam Sessions has included a Guitar Hero-inspired single player mode, added all unlocks and editing pieces for your own music creations as unlockables – thus having players go through single player mode in order to gain all the pieces of their music tool – and really lost what the game was all about in the first place; freestyle jamming in a totally open, user-created experience.

Nobody is going to rip through dozens of cover songs, starting on mandated lower difficulties, replay them over with tougher settings, and then magically come out understanding music theory and chord progression. The final package is a fun experience, and the single player career-inspired "Song Book" mode is an entertaining and superior addition than the play along mode in the first game. As far as Jam Sessions pushing the "music tool" aspect of it's design, however, I don't see much evolution from the first game.

In fact, while single player mode is a fun Guitar Hero-inspired mode, there's no actual musical teaching is going on. You press the d-pad as indicated, and when notes fall you strum on the pad. In fact, while the game's multi-string system is a nice touch for freestyle play – it adds a lot more depth to it all – it's largely ignored during single player gaming, as all other stings are inactive when the game prompts you with a specific chord.

It's tough to explain on paper, but you can essentially hold the right chord direction, strum across the entire pad, and still hit the right sound even if you were only supposed to be using two or three strings in tandem. This character, designed by Hawley Pratt, was subsequently the subject of its own series of animated cartoons – as well as being featured in the opening of every movie in the Pink Panther film series except A Shot in the Dark and Inspector Clouseau.

Films and themes

Although the two most recent Pink Panther films starred Steve Martin, most of the films in the series starred Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau and were directed and co-written by Blake Edwards. The popular jazz-based theme music was composed by Henry Mancini. In addition to the credits sequences, the theme accompanies any suspenseful sequence involving "the Phantom" at work on a theft, both in the first and in subsequent films.

Mancini's other themes for the first film include an Italian-language set-piece called "Meglio Stasera" whose purpose seems primarily to introduce young actress Fran Jeffries. This is explained in the beginning of the first film, and the camera zooms in on the diamond to reveal the blurry flaw, which focuses into the Panther (albeit not actually leaping) to start the opening credits sequence (this is also done in Return). The plot of the first film centers around the theft of this diamond, which is mentioned in only five other films in the series (The Return of the Pink Panther, Trail of the Pink Panther, Curse of the Pink Panther, and the 2006 remake of The Pink Panther and the remake's sequel The Pink Panther 2). The name "the Pink Panther" became attached to Inspector Clouseau, in much the same way that "Frankenstein" has been used in film titles to refer to Dr. Frankenstein's creation or The Thin Man was used in a series of detective films.

A Shot in the Dark, a film which was not originally intended to feature Inspector Clouseau, is the only film in the series (besides Inspector Closeau) that features neither the diamond nor the distinctive animated Pink Panther in the opening credits and ending. Many critics, including Leonard Maltin, regard this film as the best in the series.

In the original Pink Panther movie, the main focus was on David Niven's role as Sir Charles Lytton, the infamous jewel thief nicknamed "the Phantom", and his plan to steal the Pink Panther from its owner. The animated Pink Panther actually symbolizes Lytton. The Inspector Clouseau character plays only a supporting role as Lytton's incompetent antagonist, and provided slapstick comic relief to a movie that was otherwise a subtle, lighthearted crime drama, a somewhat jarring contrast of styles which is not atypical of Edwards' films. The popularity of Clouseau caused him to become the main character in subsequent Pink Panther films, which were more straightforward slapstick comedies.

Mancini's theme, with variations in arrangement, is used at the start of all but a few of the Clouseau films.

1. Learn to play three note chords in the second, third and forth strings of the guitar. These three chords are called triads and are a large part of the Rolling Stones trademark guitar sound.

Listen to the opening chords of "Start Me Up" or " Brown Sugar" for examples of this style of chord playing.

For "Start Me Up", play a "C" major triad as follows:

Play the note "G" on the fifth fret, forth string, play the note "C" on the fifth fret third string, play the note "E" on the fifth fret second string. Since all these notes are on the fifth fret you could easily play all the notes by making a barre chord with your first finger.

Incidentally this particular version of a "C" chord has a technical name. Musicians call this chord the second inversion of a C major triad. It's useful to know the theoretical terminology to communicate with musicians who play other instruments e.g., piano, bass, trumpet etc.

2. Use standard guitar tuning. Despite the fact that Keith Richard's uses a variety of 'open' tunings e.g., open "G" tuning consisting of: sixth string = D, fifth string = G, forth sting = D, third string = G, second string = B, first string = D. You can create the same sounds without re-tuning your guitar.

The big advantage with leaving your guitar in standard tuning is that you will naturally develop a better 'ear'. This is because your ear will get to know where a particular sound comes from on
the guitar. If you keep re-tuning your guitar it will confuse your ear.

3. Play two note power chords on the third and forth strings. Listen to the opening chords of the original version "Honky Tonk Women" and you will hear a classic example of the type of sound I am referring to.

Try playing the third and forth stings open, strum both of these strings and you will be playing the first chords of "Honky Tonk Women", this chord is called "G".

Remember, just because it's simple doesn't mean that it's not right. Simple works!

The trick is to pay attention to how Keith Richard "spaces" the chords, in other words listen to his rhythm.

With so many online guitar lessons it's important to get off to the right start, it is so much harder to re-learn something once it's ingrained in your brain.
