The Police Leave Lasting Impression On The Music Industry

Every decade produces a handful of extremely talented musicians that go on to leave an impression on music enthusiasts for years to come. This is precisely what The Police did beginning with their formation in 1977. This highly talented rock trio from London, England consisted of Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland.

The band quickly became a global phenom in the late 1970s and are often regarded as one of the first New Wave groups to actually achieve mainstream success. While they are most notably known for their rock music, their music was influenced by jazz, punk and reggae music.

One of the top albums they produced as Synchronicity, which was released in 1983. This album rose to the top of the charts as it was number one in the UK and US and sold an incredible amount of 8,000,000+ copies in the U.S. alone.

Over the years, Sting had become a major star on his own as he established a career beyond the Police. Along with music, he also branched out into acting and was in a number of films. While his fame was rising, his relationship with band founder Steward Copeland was little by little beginning to deteriorate.

From the last album the released in 1983, Synchronicity, some of the notable songs include “Every Breath You Take,” “Wrapped Around Your Finger,” and “King of Pain.” While the album was at #1 for just two weeks in the UK, it lasted atop the charts in the US for an incredible 17 weeks. It was nominated for the Album of the Year Grammy, but fell to another iconic figure’s album; Michael Jackson’s Thriller. “Every Breath You Take” did win the Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

Following the band’s break-up, each individual went on to pursue solo careers. In June 1986, the trio did reconvene to play three separate concerts and had a short-lived reunion tour that July. Over the years, the band has gotten together for various performances including opening at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards on February 11, 2007 in Los Angeles.

In addition, they went on a reunion tour throughout 2007-2008 as the 30th anniversary for one of the most popular songs of theirs “Roxanne” approached. The tour went from early 2007 and lasted until August of 2008.

Over the years the Police have sold more than 50 million albums worldwide and became the world’s highest-earning musicians in 2008, largely do to the reunion tour. Rolling Stones went on to rank the group number 70 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. This is quite an honor that an incredible band highly deserves.
